Grief is a big word…
Grief is an intense primal response with immense power and the capability to override our thoughts, emotions and physical well-being. Young and old, across gender, culture, nationality, and beliefs — no one is spared grief’s pain and sadness. Grief happens when we have loved and we have lost. Without having truly loved, we have nothing to grieve.
There are no wrong ways or right ways to grieve.
Grief expresses itself in many forms, shapes and sizes. Grief is personal, an experience as unique as each individual experiencing it. Although there are no prescribed ways to journey through grief, there are unhealthy ways to cope or deny the pain. Countless people turn to substances, addictions, or destructive behaviors in their time of mourning because the pain seems too great to bear. Others try to ignore the pain hoping it will disappear to no avail – grief waits and will grow in the wings until its burden becomes too heavy to ignore. Despite the enormity of the pain, there is hope. There can be light and healing through the grieving process.
Grief is a difficult journey to travel alone.
Therapy or professional support can facilitate healing for many. While therapy does not take away the pain or bring the loss back, it provides an opportunity to journey with an experienced professional who can hold and help contain your pain. Therapy can guide you on your path and in time, ignite hope for the future. It provides a safe space to process the emotions and circumstances connected with your loss and to manage your coping mechanisms in healthy ways. Therapy gives you an opportunity to normalize your thoughts, emotions and behaviors and validate your experiences. It is an opportunity for introspection as your identity without the person you love evolves and you rediscover who you are. With the help of therapy, given time, new possibilities begin to emerge.
